Vermicomposting of Domestic Waste Training Community to Reduce The Organic Pollution in Surabaya River
Generally this training has given some outcomes ie.:
1.People understand that they will pollute the water and teir well if they dispose their garbage to the river
2.people understand that they can treat their garbage to become a usefull product such as the vermicompost
3.people understand that they should separate the garbage into organic and anorganic waste to make the teatment process easier and faster
4.People has reduce the garbage they disposed to the riverbank because the organic waste was used as worm food
5.people know the technic to make vermicompost from their own waste

This program was encouraged by the desire to improve the condition of Surabaya River that has been grossly polluted by industrial and domestic waste. The industries deny them self as polluters and doesn’t want to take responsibility as the river polluter and blame the house waste that pollute Surabaya River. The government tends to protect the industry because they run the economy sector that support the development in the country and many labours and employee depends their life on the industrial activity. There is no punishment for the industry that disposed their untreated waste to Surabaya River.

Driyorejo has become an industrial area with high density of people and industries in this two decades. Driyorejo district consist of 16 villages and total population in year 2000 is 53.727 people. Most of the people here work as industrial labpur and farmer. The public awareness to preserve the river is still low. They use the river as toilet and waste disposal site for their house garbage. About 80% of the house waste is organic matters that will pollute the water and bring the reduction of dissolve oxygen content in the river waters. This condition can create anoxic condition that give bad odor to the environment. The river will lost its biodiversity and environmental services. The cost to purify the water will become more expensive and people have to pay more money to get clean water.

Biggest part of domestic waste is organic matter that can be used to make compost. The compost can be made by relies on the action of red worms (Lumbricus rubellus) to break down the organic matter and spend shorter time to produce the compost compared to the conventional composting process. The worm casting or faecal material produced by the warm is a rich source of plants nutrients which called vermicompost. The vermicompost is plant soluble, less variable and much more stable than the conventional compost. The compost produced can be used to enrich the soil in their own garden and farm or can be sold to the other farmer. The excess warm from the composting process can be used and sold as fishing worm or chicken and duck feed.

The local people house waste is often be blamed as the main polluter although their waste is less toxic than the industrial waste that contain many toxic chemicals used in the production process, such as strong acid and base and also some heavy metals. However the house waste also contributed to the degradation of water quality in Surabaya River, so we need to build the local people’s understanding about the fate of waste they have disposed into the river and we will give them a solution to use their organic waste to make vermicompost. We hope this will bring to a better water quality in Surabaya River that provides the raw water to the clean water supply company in Surabaya

The objectives of this vermicompost training are:
1. To increase people understanding and people awareness to the Surabaya River pollution
2. To train people in making the vermicompost
3. To reduce the organic pollution from domestic waste
To increase the income of local people through building their knowledge and skill in making vermicompost from their own domestic waste
1. Vemicompost Facilitator Training
The facilitator training was conducted on April 6, 2002 attended by 8 ECOTON’s member and staff. The speaker invited was a worm farmer from Bambe Village Mr. Arifin that shared his experience in growing the earthworm population for these 2 years. He informed to the attendants about the method he had applied to raise the worm. He used cow dung to feed the worm and banana stem to keep the humidity of the worm system. Because lack of earthworm that ECOTON’s had that time, he suggest to breed the worm first until reach adequate number to spread to the local people that wants to practice the vermicompost. Another speaker was Mr. Prigi Arisandi, the ecoton’s director, that gave the attendants some guidelines about become a good facilitator to the people. He told the facilitator not to intervent the people too much and let the people decide what they want and what they need. The facilitator will guide the people in practicing the vermicompos technic.

2. Vermicompost Training

This vermicompost training aims to:
a. to increase people understanding about their obligation to participate in improve and preserve the environment
b. to build the local people knowledge about making vermicompost
c. to develop local people skill in making vermicompost

Vermicompost training to Local People near Surabaya River was conducted on April 13-14, 2002 at Environmental Education Center (PPLH) Seloliman Trawas. This training was attended by 35 people who delegate the Village Parliament member, PKK, Mosque youth organization, Village youth assosiation, NGO from 5 Villages in Driyorejo District i.e. Bambe Village, Mulung Village, Cangkir Village, Driyorejo Village and Kesamben Wetan Village.

This training involved the village parliament member because we consider that the parliament has the power to drive the village development and control the government. We hope they could motivate the people in their village to participate in this program. The house waste is a big problem that will give more severe impact to the next generation and it will threat people health.

There are 4 speakers in this training, i.e.:
d. Mr. R. Herlambang Perdana that presented the topic about “Village Development by Local Community in Regional Autonomy Era”
e. Mr. Munasyim Safi’I with topic about “Human Destiny to Save the Environment”
f. Mrs. Daru Setyo Rini with topics about “The Hazard of House Waste and Some Effort to Reduce it” and “House waste Treatment with Earthworm”
g. Mr. Sutrisno wirh topic about “Vermicompost Practice”

This training revealed that there are some participants that interested to this vermicompost making, especially the farmers. This training will be followed with vermicompost practice in each village. At the end of this training we ask the participants to identify the problems of waste management and the impact that caused by the house garbage and how it should be manage.

The participant indentified the action plans as follows:
1.they have to socialize this training material to other people in their village
2.thay want to treat their house waste by using the garbage to make vermicompost
3.They need comparative study by visiting some vermicompost site that have succeed in this waste treatment to RPH (slaughter house) in Sanglah Bali, PPLH Bali, YMAI Surabaya, Yayasan Milenia Surabaya and PPLH Seloliman Trawas
4.they want to be trained technically at their own village to practice the vermicompost making

3.Vermicompost Practice

Before practice the vermicompost, ECOTON socialized the method to the people in each target village i.e Bambe Village, Kesamben Wetan Village, Driyorejo Village, Cangkir Village in Driyorejo District and Seloliman Village in Trawas Mojokerto. ECOTON also gave them some information about some environmental impact caused by garbage disposal into the river and overview to the condition of their environment that polluted by their own garbage. The socialization to 5 villages was conducted on middle of May 2002 to July 2002

ECOTON has made a vermicompost pilot project at ECOTON’s office in Bambe Village. The community in each village was expected to arrange a team that work together with a clear job description to manage the vermicompost process. The compost from this worm process is very good for the plants because it easily absorbed and contains many nutrients the plants need. The worm will reproduce and the population will increase twice in a month. The excess worm can be used as pet feed such as fish in aquarium and as fishing worm. The earthworm Lumbricus rubellus has medicinal use that believed can cure some illness such as pneumonia, asthma and increase the vitality. But because the worm was fed with garbage that might be contaminated by some toxic substances, we suggest people not to consume the worm or feed poultry with this worm. If they want to use it as medicine they must feed the worm with fresh vegetables or other clean plants.

Project Outcomes

Generally this training has given some outcomes ie.:
1. People understand that they will pollute the water and teir well if they dispose their garbage to the river
2. people understand that they can treat their garbage to become a usefull product such as the vermicompost
3. people understand that they should separate the garbage into organic and anorganic waste to make the teatment process easier and faster
4. People has reduce the garbage they disposed to the riverbank because the organic waste was used as worm food
5. people know the technic to make vermicompost from their own waste

This project also given some positive outputs as follows.

1. Vermicompost Practice in some village had given some result like vermicompost and worm yield and reduction of house waste disposal. The result in each village were as follows.

a. Bambe Village
There is one vermicompost system that was builded in Sarirejo Subvillage that treat the house waste from 10 families. The vermicompost system has given some product such as vermicompost that has been used to fertilize the garden and the worm has been given to some people interested to practice the vermicompost making. Ecoton also build two waste disposal unit for organic and inorganic waste so the people will learn to separate the waste from the sources (houses). The village government support this program and intended to make a waste treatment site using the Lumbricus rubellus worm and the Bambe Village government has provide some funds to build this waste treatment.

b. Desa Cangkir
People in Cangkir Village have planned to build a garden on riparian area of Surabaya River. They also planned to build a house waste treatment on the riparian area. The development in riparian area of Surabaya River often become conflict especially between people and village government that publish permit to use this area. The people in Cangkir Village actively protect the riverbank area through plantation, make information plat on the riverbank that no building should be build on the riverbanks of Surabaya River and do not dispose house waste into the river. The vermicompost was practiced by Mr. Sodikin who is member of Cangkir Village Parliament that actively ask his people to improve their environment. The worm has give compost and the wom bin has developed from 1 bin to 4 bin from September 2002 to February 2003.

c. Desa Driyorejo
Vermicompost practice was going to be coordiated by women activist from mosque youth organization Ms. Ari but the practice could not be conducted because the people was less interested and the women was afraid to touch the worm. Some people suggest to burns all the garbage and they don’t have to be bother by making vermicompost. But ecoton will try again to ask the people to join the waste treatment program to other people in Driyorejo District.

d. Desa Kesamben Wetan (sudah selesai)
Success Story from Kesamben Wetan Village
Mr. Sudirno was a participant of vermicompost training at PPLH Seloliman on 13-14 April 2002. He was a farmer that interested in this vermicompost making. He practice making vermicompost since August 2002 and now he get some benefit. He can use vermicompost as organic fertilizer to his garden and he can harvested big corn 3 times bigger and get more corn than the past planting season when he used chemical fertilizer. He didn’t have to buy chemical fertilizer that quite expensive and the soil structure were improved by the vermicompost. Some farmers were interested and want to follow him making vermicompost. But we still have little worm and the worm producer is far from our place and the price is very expensive, so we cannot provide the worm for other farmer that wants to make vermicompost too.
Mr Sudirno started with one box of vermicompost and now he developed it to four boxes of 1x2 meter. He use his house waste, lamb poo and garden waste to feed his worm. From August to November he already get 440 kg of vermicompost made by 3 kg of worm. He used this vermicompost to his garden 5x25 meter. The corn he plant gave him good yield and look different from the corn he planted before. The corn is three times bigger than before and gave more corn from each corn plant. He really happy to see his corn that looks different from other farmer yielded. He hope he could develop his process to produce more vermicompost and he hope he could make other farmer to join him develop the vermicompost and practice the organic farming in his village.

e. Desa Sempur Mojokerto
Sempur Village still has a natural environment and the people work as farmer and they also raise cow. There are about 70 cows in Sempur Village and the cow give many faeces that cause some problem especially bad odor. The people then want to try the vermicompost method to use their cow dung waste to minimize the negative impact. The community in

Sempur Village that attended the socialization were PAKIS (Paguyuban Keramba dan Kolam Ikan Seloliman) or Keramba and Fish Pond Community, youth and women organization. The youth will actively raise the worm everyday and run the vermicompost making. The vermicompost making has yield some result and they can sale the compost and the worm too. The worm also used to feed poultry and fish.

Constraints

•The worm is expensive and the worm provider is far from our place (in Bali) so we need more money and time to get the worm
•The awareness of the people is still low because they don’t feel this waste problem as their responsibility and the impact caused by the waste is not directly effect their life
•The people expecting some incentif when they actively involve and join the project
•The marketing of the vermicompost and worm is still limited
