In a bid to increase environmental awareness and responsibility among younger generations, the East Java provincial Education Agency has planned to include green issues in the school curriculum.
The agency's secretary Ratnadi Ismaon said such awareness was necessary as it would help create and stimulate good habits among younger people that would later be beneficial in preventing environmental degradation.
"Students need to learn about the environment earlier to help awaken consciousness and build a strong desire to involve themselves in efforts to save the environment," Ratnadi said.
"It doesn't matter if it is just a small step."
To realize the plan, the agency, in cooperation with environmental organization Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (Ecoton), held a bio-assessment activity in Brantas River in Gresik recently.
Around 200 students from 10 schools, from elementary to senior high levels, in Surabaya, Gresik, Mojokerto and Jombang, participated in the activity, which was an observation of the environment using biota as indicators.
Through the activity the students learned that the river had been highly heavily polluted by household and industrial waste, as they found bubbles and garbage floating on the river, making the river narrower and shallow.
Ecoton also helped them to see more clearly that the Brantas river's stream was seriously threatened by environmental degradation.
Ecoton's campaign division coordinator Amiruddin Mutaqien said the upper stream areas of the river had been polluted by fertilizer thanks to many of the forests in the area being converted into agricultural fields.
Amiruddin said there were currently only 46 springs left in the area, much lower than the number two years ago, which was 111.
Amiruddin also said that 4 million tons of sands had been quarried every day from the river, causing degradation at the bottom of the river up to 6-meters deep.
He added that Ecoton had observed that 330 tons of waste were dumped into the river every day.
He said Brantas River urgently needed to be saved from further pollution, especially because its stream was the main source of tap water for the 17 regencies and cities.
Head of SMPN 1 Gresik junior high school, Soetrisno, said that the results of the students' observation could be used as a reference for the quality of the river.
